Dark Skies at Kielder:
 Awarded the Gold Tier Dark Sky status in December 2013 by the International Dark Skies Association.

Kielder Marathon: If you would like to experience  one of the most beautiful marathons (as well as one of the most challenging) this is the course for you.

Kielder Observatory – this area is ideal for star gazing due to the lack of light polution and the clarity of the skies. The team at Kielder Observatory run numerous events throughout the year some for members but many open to members of the public or groups. Tarset Holiday Cottages are situated just 10 miles from the Observatory site, so can be an ideal base for those looking to explore the skies. Kielder Winter Wonderland – Winter Wonderland is an experience not to be missed for children young and old. Based in Kielder forest, children have the opportunity to visit Santa Claus in his secret woodland hideaway as well as seeing the elves workshop and Mrs Christmas. Tickets have to be bought in advance and book up fast. As we are ideally situated for those travelling from further affield to visit Santa Claus, we will consider weekend breaks during this event, get in touch for more information or to check availability.

Kielder Forest & Water – Relax and take in the stunning scenery or choose to enjoy some of the many events, land and water based activities, art, culture, heritage and wildlife. Birds of Prey Centre, Salmon Farm, Leaplish Waterside Park and Kielder Castle are a few of the many attractions. Its also an ideal location for mountain biking enthusiasts and keen walkers of all abilities.

Walking: Step outside the door and you are presented with the exclusivity of bridleways and paths that run through the 1000 acre farm. Further afield is Hadrian’s Wall, the Pennine Way and Kielder Forest. There is an annual Kielder Walk which takes in the lakeside way for those more adventurous walkers who fancy a 25mile walk, details can be found on the following website.

Mountain BikingKielder Water is cradled by Kielder Forest Park which is an excellent location for mountain bikers. A foot path and bike path has recently been developed which stretches around the lake. The more adventurous mountain bikers can take on the challenge of the purpose built tracks, graded like ski slopes according to ability. We have links with a local hire company who can provide mountain bikes for all ages and abilities and can even deliver bikes to your door during your stay at Tarset Holiday Cottages. Fishing: The farm is cradled by two rivers: the meandering Tarset Burn and and an idyllic stretch of the North Tyne River which is considered to be Britain’s best salmon fishing river. The fish hatchery up stream at Kielder releases 700,000 young salmon each year. Please contact us to arrange a beat on the 1 mile single bank which is 100 yards from your front door. The best months for Salmon Fishing on the North Tyne are August, September and October.
